A little more than a year ago, I challenged myself not to eat meat for an entire month. That month was June 2010. I did it then, but it sure as hell wasn't easy for me.
The late John F Kennedy once said...

The last time I did this, I did it not because I thought it was easy; but because I recognized that it would be difficult. We need to challenge ourselves at times. Trust me, I love the taste of meat just as much as you do. However, I am the master of my own domain. I decide what goes in my pie hole. It's going to be difficult, because I love the taste of meat, but I'm up for the challenge.
Of course, I'll be having a nice juicy steak for dinner September 30th, because I'm gonna miss meat that much. I challenge anyone else who thinks they're up for the challenge to join me........but I warn you, it won't be easy. By the time this month is over I might be healthier, but I'm gonna be one cranky mofo.
Who else is up for the challenge?!?

Oh not I!!! One of the two plusses to having kidney disease is that I need extra protein in my diet!

ReplyDeleteI try hard to never use the bathroom when I'm taking a flight; otherwise I can pee just about anywhere. I'm not above taking my snake out and taking a leak when I need to.
I'll definitely be having meat in October; I've met a guy I really, really like ;).

ReplyDeleteI'm not gonna let them go forever Budda, but I can do it for a month. Meat is just like anything else; cigarettes, alcohol, coffee, sweets or any number of other things that we don't need to live. I could say the same thing about sex too. These are the things we want, not the things we need. Getting some booty or smoking a cigarette isn't as important as drinking some water or getting sleep.

Dude, I tried that once. When my kids were very small. By the end of the week, I wanted to eat my young. I decided then and there that for their safety, I'd never go meatless again. Of course, now that they're old enough to protect themselves, maybe, just maybe, I may give it a try...
ReplyDeleteOh I hear you DaenelT, I am an avowed carnivore. I honestly can't think of anything tastier than a medium rare New York strip or porterhouse steak. I get cranky when I haven't had enough protein too.

ReplyDeleteGiving up something and replacing it with something else is not easy. Especially when it's something you love/enjoy doing.
I can recall removing starches, salts, and sugars for six months out of my daily meals. Great results, but when I started adding them back in, I couldn't take in the same amount as before. (Body/appetite changed)
The holidays are so near, so for the month of October, no desserts for me.

PrisCilla although I love sweets too, I rarely over indulge. This time of year is problematic for me too, because as it gets cooler I don't exercise as much. You'll notice that I'm boycotting meat this month and not during November and December.

ReplyDeleteLet's be honest Will B Free, soy burgers and tofu are poor substitutes for beef. Truth be told, the taste is woefully unsatisfying. Comparing these processed foods to real meat is like comparing a threesome to masturbation.
ReplyDeleteI'm late to the party but, I'll give up sweets starting tomorrow and go for a month. I barely eat meat so, that one's a bit too easy for me. I have a huge sweet tooth though so, that'll be a challenge.

ReplyDeleteAll month long I've been eating green things, cheese pizza and vegetarian Chinese food. This has been harder than the first time I did this. Next time, I plan on keeping my mouth shut.

ReplyDeleteHey Regggie, I saw a cow up close and gave up meat for about one year. I eventually lost the taste for it. I didn't eat any meat on October because I no longer eat red meat. I do still crave the smell of it cooking in my house. So I cook it; long, slow, full of spice and flavor; then I give it away! On weaker occasions I chew it but then expel it (Sick? My wife thinks so) Givin gup meat for a month really gives the digestion a big rest.
ReplyDeleteSaint James I've always treated beef like pussy, I eat it just for the taste of it. Oh and I'm from Alabama, I've seen plenty of cows up close and I won't ever give it up permanently. Now I did watch an uncle make sausage once and that was almost enough to make me stop eating it. Of course, it just took me once to watch a pig being slaughtered before I swore of shittlin's.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the taste of meat. There is no way that I could give it up permanently. I did go 20 years without eating ham, but I've got one in the oven as I type this.

ReplyDeleteNow Marci you don't HAVE to eat ham and turkey during the holidays, but they are quite tasty. You'll notice that I didn't eat meat in October, not November or December. I've eaten a boatload of ham and turkey this week. All of my pants will tell you that I ate plenty of ham and turkey. If you don't believe my pants, then just you ask my secretary spread.
