Me and my big mouth!!!

I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking at the end of last month, but my word is my bond. I said then that I would go throughout the month of June without eating meat and that's what I've been holding myself to. I won't tell you it's been easy; because the truth is that it's been harder than times in '29 for me; harder than Chinese arithmetic or even morning wood. There have been many times this month that I'd wish that I'd never opened my big mouth and said that I could or would do it. But the truth is, I've never been a man accused of saying too little. I'm glad that the month is almost over and I don't mind saying that I absolutely couldn't do this on a regular basis. I miss meat entirely too much. I can't wait for this month to be over; and just as soon as it's over I'm gonna eat a nice juicy T-bone steak. As a matter of fact, I'm gonna have that steak on July 1st for breakfast, along with some scrambled eggs with cheese and a nice big cup of coffee. Oh yeah, I'm gonna make it do what it do!!!
I've been eating beans and rice, cheese pizza, yogurt, pasta, tons of fruit and vegetables, granola, trail mix, veggie burgers made with black beans and corn and entirely too much soup. I've had two or three salads too many and watched many of the people around me stuff themselves with beef, chicken, pork and shellfish. I'm gonna finish this month without eating any meat, but I won't be doing this again anytime soon.
If you went a month without eating meat, what's the first thing you'd eat once the month was over?!?

  1. Bwahahahahaaa !!! Goin' meatless is a bitch, ain't it ?

I can't answer your question, because I couldn't even go a month without eating STEAK !

  2. Heff I miss steak so much that I almost understand addiction. I can't even begin to understand why someone would restrict themself to a "meatless" diet on a regular basis. Just doing this for the last three weeks is kicking my ass!!!

  3. It is not easy. I started moving toward a vegetarian style by using the formula my mom's church uses. When the fast is on they eat vegetrian at least four to five days out of the week. They eat meat the minimum of maybe three days. My mom is a good one-she eats none during the entire month. She does a lot of meatless pasta dishes.

I added a lot more fish to my diet. I'm not going to lie-I love steak too. I have one waiting with my name all over it But I eat more veggies than meat now. I think it is easier to gradually wean yourself off.

Check on line-there are some different recipes you might like. I do a lot of greens. Sauted kale is a hot item on my list. I love it!

Did not eating meat change how you feel physically? I usually have a lot more energy and I find that I lost some pounds without trying.

  4. I wasn't really trying to lose weight, though I probably have dropped a pound or two over the last three weeks. I find that I'm hungrier more often now. Meat goes a long way to filling us up......or rather me up. There are times now that I eat ravenously. I used to not understand how vegetarians could be some goddamned fat......now I know.

I'm gonna get up at 4:45am on July 1st and grill a thick juicy T-bone as God is my witness. You can take that to the bank. I'm going to Costco on June 30th and I'm going to be damned selective.

I've also planned a trip to Memphis the second week in July and I'll be stuffing myself with all kinds of barbecued pig while I'm there.

  5. I woulda chose the shortest month in the year,firstly...

I like meat, but I don't partake in it all the time, so I think it would have been a pretty simple thing...ok, not really, cause the moment I say I'm gonna give something up, that's all I can dream about, sleep about, think about......

  6. If I had been thinking I'd have done this shit in February. But you and I both know that a big mouth could go off at any time, it's kinda like a .38 in that regard.

  7. I just going to keep going, Reggie. I like not eating meat. For one the meat supply isn't really that safe. Who knows what eating the offspring of cloned cows will do to us in the long-run. Plus they feed cows tons of antibiotics which we then eat. And that's not good.

So I'm going to stick with the vegetables and fruits.

  8. The hell with all that Val, I just want some chicken wings......with Blue Cheese dressing on the side. Oh yeah, that's the ticket.

I hope that I never have to live in a world where not eating meat is the thing to do Val.

  9. Wow you have done well to have lasted all this time Reggie! I don't think I could have lasted all that time. In answer to your question it would be a toss up between two things. One would be a slow cooked prime rib steak from the Hogs Breath Cafe... sooooo yummy, served with a mushroom or pepper sauce. And the other thing would be lamb cutlets... I love lamb!!!

  10. I think that the first thing that I would do after a month would be to see if I could do it for two months. I mean the only reason I would do the first month is because I wanted to change my lifestyle. Otherwise, why bother? I'm too old to start making points now and life seems to be getting shorter so I'll just keep eating my meat and wish you the best.

  11. The first thing I'd do after a meatless month: that picture of those two big azzed steaks is what I'd do!!
I used to work with a woman who was a vegan or something like that for about 10 plus years, and she told the story to us in the breakroom at the job about the time she decided to eat a piece of meat--she said it was the thing she didnt know she had been missing for all those years. She could feel the strenghth of that meat she ate. She felt vitality she hadnt known and had forgotten about! She was glorifying that piece of meat!!

So I say, why bother stoppin'? Yea, meat!!
Steak, ox-tails, hamburgers, Buffalo wings, lunch meat (the real meat kind) bacon (from time to time) roast chicken, barbeque chicken, chicken and dumplings, chinese chicken anything, tripe (from time to time) goat meat (if you're bold), big azz steaks, steak burritos (I'm from Cali) All la dat!! It's ALL good!!

  12. The month is almost over man! Just a few more days Brah. You have made it this long, another week and some change won't hurt ya.

    In answer to your question....
I think a Juicy T-bone would be the first thing I would go after. I mean a T-bone that is cooked medium rare, with a little pink in the middle. Of course I would have to add a giant baked potato loaded with sour creme, butter, bacon bits and salt and pepper. Then to top it all off, I would devour a gigantic slice of strawberry shortcake while washing it all down with some ghetto sweet ass sweet lipton iced tea.
But this is just what I would do....

  13. Who swears off meat at the opening of grilling season? GLutton for punishment? I'm just a glutton.

I'm more of a lean meat, no ribeye here, gimme a filet wrapped in bacon, because bacon makes EVERYTHING better... salads, potato, broccoli, even steak.

    ReplyDelete
  14. That is so funny that you said steak and eggs... I was JUST about to say that my first meal after going meatless would be a nice big country fried steak with LOTS of gravy, some scrambled eggs and cheese and some strawberry and cream pancakes..... ummmmmm....
See, now I read some more comments and someone had to mention oxtail..... I guess that would have to be my lunch and BBQ short ribs for dinner... can you tell I like all the healthy stuff???

  15. Hi Reggie! First let me say to all the ones that are encouraging him to stick to it-- KUDOS! Now I don't know if you'll actually remember me Reggie, but I'm the vegan. :)

I was never really a big meat eater (especially beef and I cut out pig a loooong time ago) and not to gross anyone out but they are injecting unsafe vaccines into cows. I also discovered that chickens will eat their own excrement! I still can't forget 'mad cows disease' either. The thing I miss the most is seafood but now with this Gulf spill it's been said that apprx. 40% of marine life is going to be affected by this.

I commend you for trying though. And you didn't notice anymore energy at all? And winks at Val because you are so right! Beef is nowhere near as safe as it once was. I would only suggest eating beef in moderation if you can't eliminate it entirely.

And when I was a vegetarian, I wasn't fat (hahaha) and I've never encountered a fat vegetarian either but that was funny, man! Now that I'm a vegan-- I've never felt better! Hopefully you'll give it a try again one of these days. My biggest challenge in the beginning was learning how to cook tasty dishes that were filling but now that I've got that down I actually wish I never had any meat in my system at all.

Well, enjoy your steak and eggs man! (smiles) Something tells me you're going to be so stuffed after that first steak meal though (hahaha)

  16. Katherine I just love lamb too. I've been known to grill a wicked leg of lamb.

  17. Curious if you ever go two months without meat, let me know how that turns out. I can't wait for this month to be over. My problem is that I said that I'd do it, so I will.

But I won't be foolish enough to say that I'll do this again.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anna Renee I've had some really good barbecued goat. I haven't had it in years, but I remember it was damned good. A month is kicking my ass, there is no way that I could go ten years without meat. Hell, I wouldn't go two months without meat.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Dirty Red that actually sounds like what I'd do. But the difference is that I can't wait for lunch or dinner on July 1st; so I'll be eating my steak with scrambled eggs with cheese in them and a few cups of coffee.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Brohammas that's what so stupid about this challenge, it would have been easier in February. Those people that don't live in the south and don't understand the concept of the grilling season, like a neutered dog they just don't get it. I don't understand just how I fixed my mouth to say that I'd even attempt this. This was dumb on a galactic scale.

Once again, I won't be doing this shit again. But my word is my bond, so I won't be eating meat until next month.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I will never be considered as a vegetarian. In an effort to attempt the practice, I have gone months at a time without eating meat, but it made me realize how beef and chicken and pork and whatever else ... should be included in everyone's diet.

Continue to do your thing. If it were me, afterwards, I would attend a seafood buffet and eat everything on the menu.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Joanna I wouldn't trust a person who'd never eat meat. Hell I'd heard of such, but I wouldn't trust them.

By the way, the strawberry and cream pancakes sounds like a plan.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes Yoy50 I remember you; and yes, I remember that you are a vegan. Apparently you're a better person than me, because I won't be doing this again anytime soon. This is seriously kicking my butt. Everytime I turn around I see an advertisement for fried chicken or a big juicy burger. I can't wait to break this fast on July 1st.........I'm anxiously awaiting that day.

Go on, talk about meat all you want; but come July 1st, I'll be sticking it in my piehole.

I haven't noticed a burst in energy associated with not eating meat; but I've noticed that lately I've been hungry enough to start chewing on my own leg.

  24. I love seafood Don. Last week I took my daughter and wife to a local place that has a dock behind the restaurant where fresh fish is bought in direct from the hook or net. I had some tasty pasta; while they sat there eating crab stuffed mushrooms, fried oyster sandwiches and grilled amberjack.

,,,,and I just sat there eating that pasta like it was the best thing to come around since sliced bread. I'll go back there soon enough, trust me.

  25. Bro, those steaks look great and I'll be enjoying them with you in spirit!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I gotta agree with you on that nice juicy steak! I was thinking about going Vegan but you're making a pretty good argument against it!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I can't wait to have one on my grill KIT; and come next week, that's what will happen.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Riss don't make me push you the other way. It doesn't work for me, but maybe it will work for you. There are a whole boatload of foods that you can eat, today I opted for Chinese food. Today I'm eating Vegetable Egg Fu Yung, Garlic Chinese Vegetables, vegetable eggrolls, Chinese donuts and vegetable fried rice.

Still it would have been kinda nice to get an order of boneless spareribs, but that's just me.

  29. ha meat of course brother reggie,
    interesting journey you are on

  30. It feels more like a sentence than a journey Brother MK.

  31. Aww, you po thang. I've gone ten years without it, so I don't miss it a bit. Actually, the smell of cooking beef makes me rather nauseous. But I'll give you your props for going the full month, and I hope you enjoy that steak!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I feel your pain. I'm definetly a meat eater - and could not, would not stop eating meat for 30 days. I've stopped eating bread/rice/pastas for 30 days and all I could think about was bread. After the 30 days was over, I almost had to make myself eat bread. Weird.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Tha L did you say 10 years?!? Hell I'd sooner take a vow of celibacy.......almost anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Deborah it will not be hard for me to eat meat. Trust me, I'm downright thirsty for it at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  35. *sigh* IT'S ALMOST OVER REGGIE!

Man...I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE meat and thats wht i've learmed this week! I will be aeating chicken wings on July 1st. LOTS of them. And in many flavors. I can't wait! Meatlessness is sinful!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree Ms. Camile, meatlessness is sinful!!!

I'm definitely going to Hooters sometime during the first week of July. During the second week in July I'll be in Memphis shoving barbecue in my meat hole.

  37. Congratulations Reggie! That's awesome!!!

  38. I don't know Rexi, I've been hungrier than I can ever remember being all this month long.

This is day 28 and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel; but still, it's been a very long month. I honestly don't see how people do this for years at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi Reggie! No way I'd consider myself "better" than you or anyone by excluding meat. No way, no how! (smiles). I was only thinking about your journey and was hoping you'd become part of the (meatless) team tis all. So winks and hugs, man...

Hey, I hope you'll enjoy that juicy steak you'll sink the chops into in the next few days!! Something tells me it's going to be a very funny and enjoyable read so I hope you'll post your enjoyment too. My info was just that-- some info. worth considering. I ain't "mad atcha" for trying that's for SURE!! (smiles) My hats off for the effort.

    Peace, my man!

  40. Never in a million years Yoy50 could I give up meat forever.

Today is day 29 for me......a meatless 29 I might add and I'm already Jonesing on July 1st. Today I stopped by the grocery store to pick up a nice juicy T-Bone and instead fell in love with a succulent sirloin. I will have it!!! I spent a good five minutes at the meat counter drooling over the cuts.......and this sirloin was calling me.

I could hear a faint........Rrrrreeeeggggiiiieeee coming from it. I lusted after it. I wanted it to have my baby, but first I'm gonna eat it........the day after tomorrow
