Morbidly Obese

This past week I spent a couple of days in Atlanta with my wife, Kim.  I was just taking a couple of days off, she was actually going to Atlanta on business. She usually flies to these business trips, but I offered to drive her since it's only a few hours away. She was going to an office there to give some kind an informational presentation.

Anyway after she was finished with her presentation, we went out for dinner. We went to Flemings Steakhouse and I'll tell you that the food was very good.  My wife and I split a big salad, before she had some sole and I had a medium rare New York strip.  We also shared some creamed spinach and some really tasty mashed potatoes.  About the same time that we sat down, a morbidly obese woman in a red dress sat down at a table by herself right next to us. That dress she was wearing was as bright red as a fire truck and damned near as big.   She was a big big woman. She was close enough to me that I could actually hear her order her food.  She ordered some kind of appetizer, steak and lobster, a baked potato and two other sides; and she also ordered the molten chocolate cake for dessert. The cake looked really good, so much so that I almost ordered it myself.
Between our salads and her appetizer we were all pretty much eating at the same time, but she finished her food long before we did. To say she ate her food is probably not a fair description, she actually devoured it.  She must have been hungry, because she ate quickly. It wasn't exactly quiet in there, but I could hear her fork hitting her plate and I could hear her eating her food.

And when I say she ate, it was as if a leopard had dragged a wild boar or a gazelle up a tree and started eating it.  I couldn't possibly describe the sound of that woman eating, but it was almost enough to turn my stomach. When we ordered coffee after dinner, she was finishing up her dessert.  Like I said, she ate quickly.  Although I didn't see her pay for her food, I saw her when she got up to leave.  When she got up to leave, her butt was so big that the chair came up with her ass.  She initially looked surprised, then she looked thoroughly embarrassed.  Her waiter then assisted her in detaching the chair from said ass, then she got up and hurriedly left.  There are those that would have laughed at her, all I felt was sorrow for her.

This isn't the first time I've seen something like this.

Once a couple of years ago I took my daughter to a Ryan's Steakhouse for the breakfast buffet.  I really didn't want to eat there, but my daughter was rather insistent so I took her.  After I paid for our food, we found a seat in a corner and went to the buffet.  After grabbing some food at the buffet, we headed back to our empty seats by the corner window.  A morbidly obese woman in a green dress sat down next to us.  She had already been to the buffet and had a plate full of bacon, sausage and eggs.  She had no concept of table manners whatsoever.  My daughter noticed it initially, but then I could hear her eating too.  She practically inhaled her food, as if she hadn't eaten in days.  The sounds she made were nauseating.  Truth be told, it looked like she had 12 or 13 eggs on her plate and a half a pig.  We had barely touched our food when both my daughter and I just stopped eating.  We just couldn't eat anymore, it's hard to describe exactly what I felt. We basically left after taking two or three bites of our food.  I don't think that I'll ever forget the sound of that woman eating her food.  It completely turned my stomach.

On another note, my wife is completely fascinated by the growing number of television shows that deal with morbidly obese people losing weight. She's forever watching those types of shows and those shows on Discovery where people go and fix up dilapidated housing.  According to her, she likes the idea of fixing or shaping up something and making it beautiful. She also says that she finds it inspiring when people are able to leave their caterpillar behind and turn into a butterfly. So because of that she watches The Biggest Loser, Heavy, I used to be fat, I'm too fat for 16 and Discovery Body Challenge.
My wife doesn't necessarily like the part where the extremely fit personal trainer yells and screams at their morbidly obese charges when they're encouraging them to work harder in their efforts to lose weight.  She's forever referring to these people as Nazis and heartless, mean spirited bastards.
Last night as one of these shows was going off, it cited a statistic that took me by surprise.  It stated that our country, The United States, is home to the most obese people in the world. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity in American adults has increased by 60% within the past twenty years and obesity in children has tripled in the past thirty years. A staggering 33% of American adults are obese and obesity related deaths have climbed to more than 300,000 a year, second only to tobacco related deaths.
I don't doubt that there are plenty of reasons and/or excuses why there are 100,000,000 obese people in this country.  And the reality is that we live in a land of plenty, where technology has allowed for significant increases in the quality and quantity of food being produced. But 100,000,000 obese people?!? C'mon, we can do better than that.  Any damned fool can eat themselves to death.

I believe that universal health care would be a very good thing for our country, a very good thing indeed.  But unless we're all collectively willing to eat healthier and live more active lives; we're dooming ourselves to unhealthy, unnecessarily shortened, miserable lives.

  1. I agree that eating healthier and getting rid of a sedentary lifestyle would not only make individuals healthy but happier.

    Great post.

  2. WOW! This made me sad for them! The descriptions of the huge women eating has me stunned! The fact that they were eating alone out in public and attacking food like animals is surprising. I thought a level of shame came with their size, at least that's what the weight shows lead you to believe. This was an interesting post but really Reggie the visuals????? I will not laugh, I will not laugh, I will not laugh....

I'm with your wife I love watching the transformations on the fitness shows. The big reveals at the end give me so much joy. I enjoy seeing people get their life back!

  3. I haven't done any research on this, but I believe this thing has to do with the myriad of chemicals that are put in food. There has to be some kind of reaction, akin to crack addiction.
Shame flees for addicts after a time, as they are deeper into their addiction.
I believe the folks are addicted to the sugar, the fats and whatever else is in the preserved, colored, artificially flavored foods.
I have never heard of overeating bananas, apples, vegetables, and such.
    I don't know....

  4. Man this post makes me so sick to my stomach. It drives me nuts to hear anyone eating anything except maybe something crunchy.

  7. GorgeousPuddin that is something that struck me as well, the fact that they were eating alone. I used to have a morbidly obese friend who used to laugh and say that she had given up dick for porkchops.

She wanted me to laugh, but I couldn't, it just wasn't funny to me.

The fact that a big collard green eating woman should be ashamed to be big and wolf down her food like that is debateable. I think if I would big like that I wouldn't give a shit what people thought......but who really knows?!?

  8. One things for sure Anna Renee some of that food is damned good.

Like they say about Lays Potato Chips, you can't eat just one.

  9. Tiffany that's what I found so nauseating about the way they were eating. It was as if a bear were eating a horse, it sounded absolutely disgusting.

  10. Reggie great post!! I read some where that our food portions in America are way to big compared to other countries.

  11. Yeah I've heard that too jjbrock, sad isn't it? We seem to like Texas sized portions here.

  12. I'm a big fan...no pun intended...maybe a lil...of The Biggest Loser. It's a guarantee that I'm going to cry at least once, likely twice. Contestants that come on for game play, rather than for transformation, annoy me.

It takes a tremendous amount of work to lose weight when you're obese. I often wonder how is it that anyone can passively allow themselves to go from a size 8 to an 18 and beyond. (I'm not calling 18 morbidly obese). My aunt is obese. I'm sad when I speak to her. She makes fun of herself. We spoke last week. She has a chair that she sits in on her kitchen. She made a joke about how she broke her third chair. This time she replaced it with a chair she purchased out of the extra large magazine. I didn't even know they had one of those. She chose a chair that can accommodate 1k. She says that she be good since she's no where near that weight. It makes me sad.

This just turned into a post....sars.

  13. A writer I like said that obese people are like alcoholics that are forced to carry their bottles around on the outside. Their issues are obvious. Other people's aren't.

I think a big part of the reason that there are more obese people now is that we don't do as much physical labor as we used to-either as part of our job or as part of normal daily behavior.

Large portions or second helpings may make sense when you've got 60 acres to plow, a farm to run, engine blocks to lift for 12 hours a day or roads to build and tar in the hot sun. It makes less sense when you drive to work and spend most of the day sitting down.

As humans we are all designed to like sweet and salty foods. It's just that generally those foods were rare. Now they are too common.

Still even though our food delivery system stinks and is corrupt, each person is responsible for what they put into their mouth, no one else.

  14. Kellyinaday I know people who laugh at themselves like that, but I can't laugh either. To me it's just not funny.

You can usually see the pain in those people's faces. It's there, you've just gotta look for it.

  15. Those are very valid points Shady_Grady, I think it's a combination of all of those things. Even if you start with children, it's just as plain as the noses on their little faces. When we were kids we used to run around and play football, basketball, baseball and hide and go seek. These kids nowadays plant themselves in front of a television, computer or game system all day and stay there. We're just not getting the kind of exercise we used to.

But seriously, this is some sad shyt to see people destroy their temples with food. D@mned shame and very sad. Now Folk got to wash Folk's eyes out with some bleach.

  17. Oh lawd, you dun hit a sore subject with me! I get hit from obese people all the time telling me, either "I eat like a bird" or "I'm too small." Uhhh, no. You eat like a damned pig in a trough is what I tell 'em. I'm exactly the correct weight for my height is what ya seeing...back away from the table. I've been around people who eat exactly like you are talking about. All you hear is them huffing, puffing and grunting while devouring their food (oh, I forgot...I eat too slow too.) I think it begins with childhood. Every person I know who is obese has told me that, as a kid, they HAD to eat everything on their plate. They weren't allowed to waste anything. Now because they've eaten so much, their stomach is so stretched out that, it takes a buffet for them to feel full. My mother was of the mindset, if you're full, stop eating. Even now, when I'm full, I stop...and it doesn't take much. Too many obese people are in denial about how fast they eat, how much they eat and then, when they're morbidly obese...try to play it off as a joke. It's not funny, it's sad.

  18. you know reggie... it IS sad.

ive never been the type of person to judge anyone... we all have our faults... our short comings... and things about ourselves we dont like. im no better than anyone else... in any way.

the body is just a shell... the person is on the inside.

some of us recognize that we are lacking or... wrong in some way... and we change; and some of us see our situation as hopeless and we give up and give in to our addictions (or whatever).

i dont know how one gets from the former to that latter... but i believe thats what happens to a lot of these people.

i dont watch much tv... i dont watch ANY reality tv... but ive seen and heard ads for those shows like the biggest loser... and i think that IF thats what it takes to help those people get healthier... then good for them.

you KNOW its GOT to be humiliating to weigh 300+ pounds... and unlike a drug addiction YOU CANT HIDE THAT!

*sigh*... i dont even know what else to say.

  19. Reggie... ya know I luv ya... but this post seems so damn judgmental. See, as you know, I am fat, what would be classified as "morbidly obese" And, I know that as a fat woman, when I go out to eat, my every move is being scrutinized. People look at what I am ordering. The look at how I am eating. They look at how I am dressed, what hair style I have, and on and on. And they are judging every minute of it. If I order the SAME breakfast platter my tiny sister, I am looked at as a disgusting pig. If we eat at the same speed, I am judged to be wolfing down my food. And as for noises? Well, I don't made much noise when I eat, but I am sure that some people who see me in a restaurant would swear on the bible that they heard me snorting like a pig while chowing down. Fat changes your perception of a person. If those women had been "normal" sized, you would have never noticed the speed that they ate at. You would not be commenting on the noises they were supposedly making while eating. I know this for a fact. I have even had people look at me with the evil eye when I was eating cottage cheese.... one person had the nerve to approach me and tell me that it was too fattening and I should be eating salad. Think back over your experience at the restaurant. Were those woman REALLY doing anything that a "normal" person wouldn't do? Could it be that you were looking at them from a frame of reference that EXPECTED them to be gross BECAUSE they were fat?? It happens ALL THE TIME

    ReplyDelete
  20. I can't believe you were shocked to find out that were the most obese lol. Like you said we are the land of plenty...but we are also the land of lazy. I've been overseas and there are barely any obese people there under the age of 40..they like to walk and get out, they are active. Americans are very lazy, we love to eat & watch tv...it's very sad.

I know how your wife feels, I'm a personal trainer & I hate trainers that yell at people. You can still get the job done in a normal tone. But if people are not trying then you can raise your voice, but yelling just to yell is stupid. And I know how you feel too about someone unhealthy feeding into their addiction...literally, it's very disturbing. The sound of the glutenous smacking is hard to hear.

  21. Folk I've often said that any damned fool can eat themselves to death. We could all probably FIND a reason to do just that.

    ReplyDelete
  22. BayouCreole my parents always made me clean my plate too. My father would say stuff like "damned if you're gonna throw away good food when kids are starving in Boliva....some place". Anyway, they also didn't pile my plate up like they were stacking bricks either.

  23. Michelle the truth is that there are no perfect people, only perfect intentions.

Hell I didn't know what else to say either when I saw that woman in that dress that was as bright as a fire truck and damned near as big shoveling all that food into her pie hole.

Our people......human kind, need to do better by other people and ourselves. We can all start by living healthy, happy lives.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Judgemental?!? No, this isn't judgemental Joanna.

Nor is this blog entry an indictment against morbidly obese people. I'm merely recanting a couple of personal experiences with gluttonous people with very poor table manners.

I dare say that most decent people would have been completely put off by the displays of gluttony that I witnessed Joanna. Shit was bad......period.

I've seen so called "normal sized" people eat like dogs too. I remember watching a skinny friend of mine eat an entire Big Mac in less than ten seconds and that was gross too.

He thought it was hysterical, I thought that he was a goddamned pig!!!

Those two "hungry" women made the absolute most disgusting noises while they inhaled their food. I didn't intend to be mean about this, but I could have been a helluvalot more descriptive.

These two women didn't play, they quit school because there was a recess. They didn't play at all. Both of them were just "hungry" apparently and each feeding was an unpleasant sight.

  25. Poppy I'm sure we've all heard it before and it's absolutely disturbing.

Although the incident at the steakhouse in Atlanta happened last week, I can still clearly remember that incident at Ryans that occured 4 years ago at least.

I don't think that I ate after that incident at Ryans for the rest of the day. It seriously turned my stomach. And honestly, I felt nothing but sorrow for that woman last week. That had to be completely humiliating.

  26. Reggie I have a story for ya. After wards we can compare on whose is the worse..

One of my best friends form childhood moms (may she rest in peace)was obese. We used to have to help her carry her groceries up to her apartment because the elevator in the building was always broke. Mind you they only stayed on the 2nd floor. One day my man calls me frantic telling me to hurry up and get down to his crib. I didn't know what was going on so I ran down the steps(the elevator was broke as usual..what can I say... living in the pj's in the 80's. we stayed on the 7th floor by the way) and ran into their apartment. Dude yelled for me to come into the bathroom. I paused for a minute because I was like, you want me to come in the bathroom with you man? But he insisted so I ran to their bathroom. Prepare yourself man....My man was on his knees trying to pull his moms out of the tub because her big ass (god bless her sweet soul) got stuck!! I had to help him pry her out of the damn tub man!!
So your story about listening to to fat-ass fat women eat ain't got shit on the mess I saw that day...I'm just saying....

  28. This is such an unhealthy growing trend in our country :(

I don't even know what to say, people act like it's rocket science or something, just make better choices in the food you eat and cut back on your portions. And not to turn this into an Alee conversation, but because it has now become accepatble to be obese, overweight or "thick"<<<(yeah right!) people think there's something wrong with me because I'm thin. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Alee... you say that it has become acceptable to be obese. Ha! I cannot even begin to tell you the type of shit I go through on a daily basis because of my weight. And it has absolutely nothing to do with health. The people who stare and poke fun and hate me because of my size do not care how healthy or unhealthy I am, they simply feel offended by having to look at me. Well, they need to get over it. As far as I am concerned, there is no reason for obese people to face the type of hatred we face every day. I am not hurting YOU by being fat, so why should my weight be in any way unacceptable to YOU? Are you concerned about whether or not I have a heart attack? Somehow I doubt that. It is more about you not wanting to have to look at someone who you consider to be less than human. And understand, when I say YOU, I am referring to the collective you, society as a whole, not you as an individual.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Damn Dirty Red!!!

Do you mean to tell me that you reached into a bathtub with your boy to pull his big collard green eating mama's ass out?!?

Damn, you're one helluva good friend.

  31. Jay sometimes we all need a little motivation; but from what I can see, you don't have a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Alee the absolute worst thing to ever happen to women today is the term "thick". And I can't say I'm not guilty of uttering that awful word myself.

You're a cutie, that's obvious so you know women will hate. It's what you females do best.

But seriously some people act like the term "thick" is license to be overweight and unhealthy. At some point in time we've gotta get a handle on this. I just hate to see so very many unhealthy people walking around, looking like they caused a famine somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Joanna I'm concerned about you. I hate to see anyone unhealthy for whatever reason.

Diabetes runs in my family like Van Camps has pork n'beans. I have to exercise and eat healthy or I'll die, plain and simple. Diabetes killed my father and his mother, my grandmother. My walking around weight now is approximately 180 and I'm over 6'1. I have to be careful of the things I eat, everyone who knows me or is around me on a regular basis knows that.

When people are unhealthy, they do have an impact on the rest of society though, they absolutely do. When you sit back and think of those 100,000,000 obese people, it's kinda scary.

Think of all the people that have health problems associated with their obesity.

The health problems associated with obesity are numerous. Obesity is not just a cosmetic problem. It's a health hazard. Someone who is 40% overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely as is a normal weight person. This is because obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions, including:

    Heart disease and stroke.
    High blood pressure.
    Diabetes.
    Cancer.
    Gallbladder disease and gallstones.
    Osteoarthritis.
    Gout.
Breathing problems, such as sleep apnea (when a person stops breathing for a short time during sleep) and asthma.

Heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death and disability for people in the U.S. Overweight people are more likely to have high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, than people who are not overweight. Very high blood levels of cholesterol can also lead to heart disease and often are linked to being overweight. Being overweight also contributes to angina (chest pain caused by decreased oxygen to the heart) and sudden death from heart disease or stroke without any signs or symptoms.

The good news is that losing a small amount of weight can reduce your chances of developing heart disease or a stroke. If you are overweight, reducing your weight by 5%-10% is proven to decrease your chance of developing heart disease.

You could say that this is my little public service announcement.....but somebodys gotta do it I suppose.

All this is rather sad to me because anyone can lose weight. Our bodies need X amount of calories daily to gain, maintain or lose weight. It takes just a little exercise in conjunction with daily intake to lose weight.

I don't like exercising and I like to eat. As a matter of fact I've got a weight problem, I can't wait to eat. I regularly exercise and I limit my intake and casually turn down the things that I don't need to eat.

I firmly believe that any damned fool can eat themselves to death, that's no great feat.

There's nothing special about me and I've lost weight......anyone can.

Joanna I sincerely want you to be healthy, we should all strive to take better care of ourselves.

  34. Reggie - to be honest, your mocking tone and the constant degradation of fat people has a lot more to do with us living miserable lives than out actual weight. To be honest, shit like this makes me not want to visit this blog anymore. The blatant disregard for fat people's humanity comes through loud and clear in your post and in the comments from your readers. I shouldn't be surprised though, it is still extremely acceptable and even encouraged to treat fat people as less than human. Eh, it is what it is.

  35. I've been watching the show "Heavy" lately. It seems to me that the people that are trying to lose weight always had a traumatic experience. This makes me think that it's more than just eating to eat.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yikes! It's unpleasant even when a thin person eats like that, but I can't deny that seeing a morbidly obese person do it accentuates the bad impression. Not everybody can get away with the same things, 'tis the truth.
I read that many contestants from The Biggest Loser gained back all or a good chunk of the weight they lost. They do look happier at the end of the show, but I don't think losing so much weight so fast is good. A lifetime of bad habits cannot be fixed in a few months.
I'm trying to lose weight myself, on a diet high in protein with a side of vegetables (yuck), and I'm pleased with how it's going. No starvation, no feeling faint, and it curbed my cravings for sugar big time. Once I lost 10% of my body weight, I felt much better, I guess it's not just an arbitrary number.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh yeah BayouCreole, he most definitely wins. I honestly don't believe that I could have ever on my best day walked into a bathroom and pulled one of my friends big naked mother out of a bathtub.

  38. Mocking tone Joanna?!? No, I don't have a mocking tone. Me thinks you doth protest a little too much.

I wrote this blog entry because of a couple of personal experiences that I had. Please take the time to read this again. This entry is just like all the others I write. I use a little humor here and there to tell a story. My stories aren't malicious or mean spirited Joanna.

I'm certainly not some kind of big babe bigot. Some of my best friends are carrying some extra weight with them. I don't judge them and I don't judge you.

I wasn't making fun of either of these women. I was merely relating a personal experience and I wasn't doing it at the expense of all the overweight people in the world.

If you decide not to return to my blog as a result of this entry, that's your call. I'll continue to frequent yours and I'll strive to not be offended by what I read there. If you should decide to come back to my blog, I ask you to show me the same regard.

  39. Citizen Ojo could there possibly have been 100,000,000 traumatic experiences that the people that currently live in this country experienced?!?

Nah brother, sometimes I think when we hurt ourselves we need to start with that man or woman in the mirror first.

  40. Catintherain while dieting and exercising a couple of years back, I lost about 20% of my total body weight. I wasn't particularly large to begin with, but it's been a serious change for me. I love to eat beef and fried foods; and that steak that I ate last week is the first steak that I had in months. I used to eat them constantly, along with tons of fried chicken. I used to stop at Hooters on a regular basis and I ate enough chicken wings to sprout feathers myself. But you know what, I was on the path to self destruction, so I cut that shit out.

I eat healthier now and I regularly exercise. I lost the weight and I've kept it off. I eat more grilled chicken and fish now and less beef and lamb. Did I mention just how much I love lamb?!?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Reggie... I don't think anyone "strives" to be offended, it just happens! LOL... Seriously, you say I "doth protest to much" but read your post and the comments that follow with a discerning eye, and maybe try imagining how you would feel if someone were talking this way about some characteristic that YOU possessed and got a lot of flack for. It is just really annoying for the whole world to think it is ok to put fat people on blast and expect us to just laugh it off.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Then I would ask that you NOT make this blog entry about you, because it's not about you it's about my personal experience.

When people make light of men with large penises, I feel the pain......but I just let it go.

Joanna one third of our country is obese, that's not a good thing. Anyway you look at it, we need to collectively do better.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I read your post the other day, but was pushed for time and didn't get to respond. Man it seems we all have an addiction to something be it food, drugs, sex or sweets. The women you mentioned that sat near you and your wife while you were dining at Flemings must have ruined your meal, to see someone just gobble their steak and other food, damn.

The woman must not want for much if they can afford to eat at Flemings and order the type of foods/dishes Flemings serves. I don't think we realize how dangerous it is to eat the way we do sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Chet sometimes we're good to everyone but ourselves. We can see the humanity and common decency in everyone but the person we see when we look in the mirror. There's a quote by George Orwell from the book Animal Farm that goes like this.....

"The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."

You're right, the way she was eating was nothing less than dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  45. All I can say is wow! At first I was laughing because you know the relationship I have with your blog pictures but this is very serious. I'm 24 and I've been on a diet since I was 16. smh. I will never give up the fight to get and stay healthy. Obesity runs in my family and i can gain weight looking at food so I work out! And I try to eat right most days. Fat is too easy to cure but all the other ailments that can come are not worth the "good" (deadly) food.

  46. I never know what to make of it. I had a friend who is going through the obese motions come round my house. dude stormed through a box of 12 doughnuts with his coffee as I went to the shop to get some beers, didn't even leave one. I couldn't believe it and got what his wife was moaning about. Had a very serious chat with him and now he's trying (I hope) to deal with it.

  47. We all struggle with something Camile. I'm sure we've all got out demons. But I must say that your comment was pretty interesting. I used to have a friend who had 6 children and she always seemed to be pregnant. She claimed that she could get pregnant simply by looking at her husbands dick. Whenever she said that I had to laugh to myself, because I know damned well she had to do more than just look at it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ya know Chrome in the office I work in, I'll grab a box or two of donuts on my way in occasionally. I've done it so often that some of the ladies there seem to expect for me to do it. Last week I stopped at Krispy Kreme donuts and picked up a couple dozen glazed and I doubt those two boxes sat on my desk longer than 10 minutes before the last empty box was just sitting there empty and spinning. They stormed into my office and took those donuts down like a herd of elephants headed for a water hole. They're not all big women, some of the little ones were taking two or three too.

  49. Reg... now you know you speak poorly of anyone, except fat people.
If you look at the fattest states you'll notice that most are in the South.
Then look at the most undernourished states - many of these same states are on tis list as well.
    Overfed but undernourished.

    ReplyDelete
  50. John the reason why the fattest states are in the south is because down here we fry everything.......everything. Hell I'm sure you can get a fried dog down here somewhere if you look hard enough.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Honestly...
If I walk into a restaraunt and see fat people - I walk out.
I get sick just looking at fat people.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well, UBJ, I suggest you stay locked inside your own home then, safely away from the horror of having to look at people like me, cuz I sure as hell am not going to hide because someone considers ME "unnacceptable"1

    ReplyDelete
  53. C'mon John don't hold back, tell us how you really feel.

    ReplyDelete
  54. With one in three people in this country being obese, it's hard to walk into any place these days and not see someone obese.

    ReplyDelete
  55. These are really sad statistics. The pics are equally alarming. Too bad people don't use Aerobic Videos anymore. You can exercise at home as long as you want. The key is control.Control your portions, drink water, exercise. Then you have no problem. BTW, There's alot of overweight people in California. Sad but true.
    Nice Blog.
    Peace Out!!!
    Niecy

    ReplyDelete
  56. Those are scary statistics. I watch those shows too. They keep me in check. Many of the morbidly obese people have family issues, depression, abuse in their past, etc. It's a shame that food has become an escape for so many people.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Niecy there are plenty of obese people here in the deep south, where everything is deep fried.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think that food becomes a comfort substitute for so many people Mlvlatina. They substitute food for love or exercise or friends or whatever else.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I ain't scared of fat people - I just can't eat while looking at them.
I have no idea why but if I look up while eating and see a fat person eating - I'm done.

    ReplyDelete
  60. John that's how I was the day I saw that woman eating at the buffet I took my daughter to. I'm not scared of obese people either, that day I was just disgusted with the manner in which that woman was scarfing her food down.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Reggie..... My former friend weighed a total of 489lbs. We went out to eat once and the grunting sounds she made as the food entered her mouth were alarming. She questioned as to why I was no longer eating, and I replied that I was full, observing her in this manner was shocking to me. She comsumed the slice of cake place before her in two bites, as she lifted it off of the saucer and put most inside of her mouth, noting +I could eat it all in one bite but I am just being nice.

In observing her behavior on several occassions, I have come to understand that her excessive eating is an illness...... An Illness that has yet to be defined in America.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Texas Queen I don't know if this type of thing is an illness. I think that maybe someone can channel their illness or other issues into unhealthy things...this being one of them.

If anything it's a sin, just like lust, anger, sloth and pride. It is what it is.
