Make no mistake about it, I've definitely got the heart and the stomach of a carnivore. I absolutely love the taste of a good steak..........and I love my steak medium rare. I'd prefer not to drench it in steak sauce, as that would kill the taste. I prefer to wet it with just a dab of Worcestershire sauce .....just a dab mind you.
I also absolutely love fried chicken. Yeah I know......that tired ass stereotype about the black man and fried chicken, but dammit I love it. As a matter of fact, fried chicken wings are downright scrumptious to me, particularly when they're dripping with blue cheese dressing. If I ever get put on death row, some wings marinated in Tabasco and fried with a side order of blue cheese dressing just might be my last meal......with a big ass ice cold Coke (I gave Cokes up a few years back). Damn but that sounds good!!!
The only thing better than a cheeseburger is a bacon cheeseburger. That's the only possible way that I could think that it could possibly taste better....and who doesn't love a good cheeseburger?!?
Anyway I say all of this to say, that I am a lover of red meat, lamb, fish and chicken. But next month, June 2010, I'm going to give it up. Oh not permanently, I don't want to be stupid or nothing. I'm just going to challenge myself to go an entire month without eating meat!!!
I'm serious
Who is with me?!?

Oh Hell-to-the-NO!
ReplyDeleteI know John, but I've got to do this. I've got to do it for me.
ReplyDeleteTry eating better COMBINATIONS of food instead.
ReplyDeleteI'll do it. But I must disclose that I really only eat meat about twice a month so it won't really hurt that much.
ReplyDeleteAlso are you giving up eggs too?
And about the fried chicken thing. Who doesn't like fried chicken? I mean really, are there lot's of White people running around who hate fried chicken? Nope.
You got that shit. I tried it before. Was gonna do it for a month myself and ain't make it for 2 days. Next day at lunch, I walked my Happy ass to McDonald's, got me a Double Quarter Pounder and said "FUCK DAT!!". I JUST CAN'T DO IT!!
ReplyDeletebut more power to ya.
Good luck with that, it sounds like if you like all of those things as much as you do it could be quite a challenge. I don't eat much red meat. Or meat in general. But sorry, I won't be joining you on this one :)
ReplyDeleteagggggggggggggh Reggie. Damn! I've been rtying to do this all year! I lasted up to a week on two separate occasions! ahahhaha I'm going to do it with you...or try! Damnnnn those wings look BOMB lol. Welp only a few days left so I'm eating one of each of the things above! hahahahaha EXTRA bacon and ranch!
ReplyDelete~Cam
I'm moving in that direction myself. I have been slowly removing meat from my meal plans. I'm thinking maybe mid June will be a wrap for me.
ReplyDeleteSee, now I am going to have to get some chicken wings tomorrow, and I was really hoping to hold on to the rest of my money to get a new piercing. But damn, I am in the mood now for some chicken wings with garlic sauce.... or maybe BBQ sauce... mmmmmmmmmm.... (now there is a little drool coming out the corner of my mouth!)
ReplyDeleteSorry, I HAVE TO eat meat EVERY DAY!!! I cannot imagine dinner without some kind of dead animal on the plate!! (Ok, PETA come get me now!)
Reggie. This post made me sooooo hungry now. Good luck giving up meat for a month. I won't be joining you on this one, though. I have to have my kentucky once in a while. And besides if I cut meat out of my menu my hubby will kill me, cause he just loves meat.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day, Reggie. :)
Count me in Reggie! As long as I can have sweets no problem.
ReplyDeleteIn the SUMMERTIME ? PRIME GRILLING WEATHER ??
ReplyDeleteHave a good time, Hoss.
I'll be thinkin' about ya whilst suckin' back a greasy BBQ pork rib in your honor.
I tried being a vegetarian before. the most I could possibly do is what Tha L does: she eats seafood. But no other kind of meat except seafood. I lasted about 4 months doing that before I just had to have a steak. Hahaha. But I have been thinking about it a lot lately, and I think I want to try it again. Maybe.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Reggie! I'm a vegan now. If we knew what's being injected into cows and how chicken has been genetically altered... I think it would be pretty easy for everyone to give it up.
ReplyDeleteRock on, man!
nah... im not comin with you reggie... but maybe i will make 2 days a week meatless days or something like that? i could easily live in pasta with vegetable&tomato sauce.
ReplyDeleteyou have to make sure you are getting enough protein if you are going to go completely meatless... eat lots of beans and eggs and high protein stuff like that... i would suggest seeds and nuts... but i remember someone once saying Reggie "doesnt eat anything with a name that can be used to describe parts of the male genitalia" LOL peanut butter is high in protein too i believe.
balancing your diet is important or you will feel like shit and be tired all the time... you'll get dark circles under your eyes etc etc.... its probably a healthy thing to try to do... but do it properly... no one dont wants you getting sick.
that was s'posed to say " i could easily live *ON* pasta with vegetable&tomato sauce."
ReplyDeletebut i might be able to live in it too i guess lol
John its really not about that. I eat fairly healthy now. Healthy eating has been a focus of mine for the last year and a half or so. I just want to challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone and do something different.
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoy the taste of meat. I just want to try something different.
Val if I give up meat.......I can't give up eggs too. I'm willing to go to The Waffle House and order some grits and toast and eggs with cheese without sausage. But if I don't have any meat with all that greasy goodness, I've gotta have the eggs with cheese.
ReplyDeleteFried chicken wings with blue cheese dressing is my crack!!!
Wizzy Jr. no fair.........why you want to go ahead and even mention a double quarter pounder with cheese to me??!!??
ReplyDeleteThen again, I could go get one before next Tuesday.
This is going to be VERY hard for me to do. I know that.
Eva I absolutely love red meat!!! This is not something that I take lightly; nor is it something that I believe will be easy to do. But sometimes we challenge ourselves to do things not because they're easy, but because they are hard. This will be a challenge for me and if I can't do it, I'll blog about it.
ReplyDeleteNo shame in my game.
Ms. Camile let's do this. It's just a matter of perspective and mind over matter. If you don't mind, it won't matter. Rather than meat, we can eat an extra serving of vegetables or fruit. Or maybe, we'll just have a bigger slice of cornbread. Who doesn't want a bigger slice of cornbread?
ReplyDeleteOr maybe we could have spaghetti and sauce...just not meatballs. Or maybe I'll make red beans and rice....without the sausage. Maybe I'll make a lot of soup next month, I love vegetable soup.
There are so many things that we can eat other than meat. C'mon, let's do this.
Msladydeborah maybe it would be easier if you started with me and whomever else decides to accept this challenge and we can provide each other with support?
ReplyDeleteI've never really been serious about this type of thing before, but this I WILL do.
Joanna the Bible teaches us that God gave man dominion over the beasts. I have no problem partaking of some chicken or cow flesh.....it's whats good.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm thinking about those chicken wings too. But next month I'm not going to eat any meat...........just next month, not the month after that.
Bernadine I ain't mad at no Kentucky........hell maybe I'll go get some right now?!?
ReplyDeleteJJBrock I'm not talking crazy, you don't have to give up sweets too. I don't eat many sweets, but when I do I enjoy mine.
ReplyDeleteAnyone of us can give up meat for a month, it's not a big deal.
Heff you and I are from Alabama, someone from another part of the country might not understand what the smell of some damned good barbecue will do to a man.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to try to not go to Alabama in June or I'm sure that I'll end up at Dreamland. There's one in Montgomery right across the street from Eastdale Mall.........those are some damned good ribs!!!
I can hold out for a month though.
Rexi I'm only talking about a month, so I'm going to go that month without seafood as well. The way I see it, I'm not gonna eat anything with a face in June.
ReplyDeleteHold on now Yoy50, I'm not giving it up permanently. I'll be filling my piehole with it again in July. If I wasn't interested in eating meat ever.........I'd become a butcher or work for Tyson Foods or the cattlemen's association.
ReplyDeleteTrust me, meat is my lover. I just plan on cheating for a month.....that's all.
Michelle I haven't eaten any peanut butter in awhile, but I'll probably make a point to eat it on a weekly basis in June.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to get sick either. It's not like I'm gonna start smoking crack in June, I'm just going to go 30 days without meat.
I know what you meant Michelle. You know that spelling nor grammer count on my page.
ReplyDeleteGood luck reggie.. I can't be with you on this one bro. Just brought myself a brand new grill that I'm going to be breaking in this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI once went a couple of months without taking in any fructose corn syrup. That first week was a bytch but before long, I was looking at every gawt d@mned package I picked up.
Folk I've got an old trusty rusty barbecue grill thats about five years old now. I've made love with that old thing so many times it's just unreal. We've had some really beautiful experiences together with ribeyes and strips and leg of lamb and hot wings and salmon and a host of other dishes.
ReplyDeleteI love my grill.
I wish you all the best with your personal challenge Reggie but winter is right on our doorstep here in the land down under & a meatless month might just be a little too hard. I think I could manage not eating red meat for a month but I love chicken & fish and would really miss that! Are you allowing yourself to eat fish?
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact, no; I'm not gonna eat fish either. It's a big change for me too Katherine because it's seldom that I go a meal without meat, much less a day.......or a month.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I think it would be equally difficult for me to give up coffee for a month....but I've done that before too.
Go for it...But this post made me wanna go and gourge on a nice juicy steak right now lol...
ReplyDeleteThank you Jennifer......just reading it again made me want fried chicken.
ReplyDeleteScrew it, I'm gonna go get some while I can.
Good for you Reggie.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about giving up the red meat, pork, and chicken, and going back to eating only turkey ground or fillet breast meat only, but am really leaning to no meat at all for a few months. (Just have to make sure I'm getting my necessary protein in other foods).
Good luck on a better you..........
I think that the necessary protein is very important too 'Cilla. I was thinking that I could make a concerted effort to eat plenty of nuts and peanut butter. I'm concerned about my dietary needs too.
ReplyDeleteReggie,
ReplyDeleteYou are on your own with this one man.
A good steak, some fried chicken, lamb chops, pork chops and any other "chops" you might think of, ain't never done nothing bad to me. I should lay off for a minute, but the way I see it....That is the precise reason I work out 4 times a week. I don't believe in dieting. Keeping active and not over eating is all a person has to do to stay healthy. But I ain't mad at you though. It will probably do your body good. In fact I know it will, I just don't have the will power to go through it. I tried to stop eating pork a few years back. I lasted a year and some change. But all it took was one slice of bacon and it's like that year of being pork free never existed. Maybe one day I will try to do what you are doing, but it won't be this day.
Good luck man. I know you can do it!
Yeah I try and stay active too. I do a lot of walking; this past Sunday I walked at least 10 miles. On a regular basis I walk at least 3 miles a day.
ReplyDeleteI'm 6'2 and I weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of 175. I actually challenged myself to do this. I don't expect it to be easy. Today I made a run around lunchtime to pick up pizza. We got Meat Lovers, Supreme, Pepperoni and Cheese; I just got a slice of cheese personally. I watched many people walk away with 3 and 4 slices like it was no big deal. Any damned fool can eat themselves to death, moderation of just about anything is the way to go as far as I'm concerned.
I have challenged myself in the past to give something up that I enjoy. That's the whole thought process behind giving certain things up for Lent or when people fast. It's a good feeling..........but make no mistake about it, I'm a meatavore........this shit is gonna be hard for me.
Today when I looked at that Meat Lovers and Supreme and stepped off.......that shit was hard dog!!!
My wife doesn't like pork, so we don't eat it. The only way I get it is on a burger....or maybe at IHOP or The Waffle House. I've eaten so much turkey bacon over the years....I don't even recognize the difference now. In the last 25 years, I've only had two or three porkchops. It's just not something that I have to have. I love beef, lamb, chicken and fish; and some pig on a pizza or on a burger.
@ reg - Oh, okay. I understand.
ReplyDeleteI once went a year without spending money (no lights, gas, water, phone, car, etc.) just to re-learn the lessons from poverty.
Sometimes you gotta' do some crazy ish just to make yourself better for yourself.
Yeah maybe John, but two days in this is kicking my ass!!! I was seriously Jonesing on some chicken wings at lunch earlier today and on the way home I seriously wanted to stop at a Chinese place down the street for some boneless spareribs and some shrimp egg foo yung.
ReplyDeleteToo bad this isn't February. Sometimes there are only 28 days in February. Could be worse, could be July or August. There are 31 days in those months.
So how is the challenge going Reggie??? Are we still meat-free??
ReplyDeleteYes Katherine and while I knew that this would be a challenge; after only two days I can honestly say that I may have made a mistake this time. I've really been craving meat. My boss decided that we should feed the entire office pizza yesterday.......well guess who was tasked with ordering it and even going to pick it up?!? That Meat Lovers and Supreme looked really good.........but I just got a slice of cheese.
ReplyDeleteToday I would have run a mile for just a few chicken wings. Just thinking about it is driving me to distraction.
Last night I had spaghetti and sauce for dinner, tonight it was a vegetarian burrito. This sucks.
you should bust out that salad recipe i sent you.... you REALLY might like it, its excellent... it tastes SO GOOD, just thinkin about it is making me want some!!!
ReplyDeleteplus it has nuts and seeds in it... so you get a lil protein too!
Hmmmm, maybe I'll do that this upcoming weekend Michelle. The last few nights I've been eating cheese pizza, vegetarian burritos, split pea soup and an all vegetarian Chinese food spread.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed that I've been irritable lately, hopefully I won't kill anyone by the end of the month.
Good for you Reggie! That means no pork too! Great! Wish I would have known of challenge earlier, I probably would have joined in. The only thing I wish to give up is beef/red meat and pork. Ironically, I had planned to blog about my latest fitness challenge I signed up for that begins tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your challenge.
Blog on Trish!!!
ReplyDeleteYes I'm not eating any meat this month.......and it's been very difficult for me. Even though it's only day 6 for me, this feels more like day 20. I've found that there are numerous alternatives to meat, most of them unfulfilling at best. Today I picked up some "bean burgers" from Costco, hopefully they won't be too bad. This time last month, I wouldn't have considered eating veggie or bean burgers.....but now........
Nope, this month it is my intention to not eat anything that used to have a face. Not meat, not fish.......nothing with a face.
Oh, I feel like eating a nice juicy steak RIGHT NOW, with some carrots and mash potato and gravy. Oh, that would be SO satisfying, but it's late at night, so I will have to settle for some chocolate or something.
ReplyDeleteMaybe thursday or friday.
Hmmmm, as I type this I'm grilling a leg of lamb and a couple of salmon filets. I'm so damned glad that June is over!!!
ReplyDeleteNever again.
